Q&A

We’ve done our best to answer all your questions in this FAQ. However, if anything remains unclear, please feel free to send us a message on Instagram or contact us by email at info@wild-read.com. We’d be delighted to help.

I only read one or two books a year, can I come to the retreat?
Of course! This retreat has been thought for book lovers who want to experience the thrill they feel while reading but in real life, no matter how many books you read during the year. You don’t have to buy all the books and read 5 books a week to attend the retreat, we welcome avid and timid book lovers equally. The number of books you read does not define your ability to fit into the retreat, it is a safe space for every type of reader.
I don’t really read romantasy, fantasy or romance but I am very intrigued. Can I join?
Absolutely! Every retreat is a welcoming space for those who love, like or are curious about fantasy, romantasy and any types of romance stories. Activities are built around giving you a taste of what it means to be the main character of your own story, and wether you are a dragon expert, a period romance drama queen or a novice in those topics, there is a space for everyone!
What will I need to be prepared for weather wise?
Scotland, like readers, can be very moody. You could get the sunniest and warmest week of the year in September, the gloomiest in May and the driest in the middle of October. But, you should always have with you a raincoat, extra pairs of socks and a hat, just in case.

Before every retreat, we will have a catch up with all participants to discuss what you can expect from Scotland at the time of the year that you will be joining us. Every lodges that will welcome us have central heating and fireplaces, and everything will prepared for you to be warm and cosy if need be.

But keep in mind that Scots say that Scotland will give you all seasons in a day for a reason. No matter what, it will always be welcoming and beautiful.
What do I need to bring with me to the retreat?
Before every retreat, a check list will be sent out to all participants depending on the theme of the retreat. We’re pretty sure you will have everything you need already in your drawers and deepest closets, but just in case. We will also have a video call to answer any questions you might have regarding what need to be packed to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.

However, all towels, covers, bedsheets, soap and kitchen utensils or food and beverages will be available for you at the lodge. No need to add more weight to what will probably be an already overpacked suitcase (we listen and we don’t judge).
Will there be any arrangements made for my allergies or food requirements?
Wild Read wants to welcome everybody and make you as comfortable as possible. you will be able to share with any food allergies and requirements you might have ahead of the retreat so that our amazing cheffe can adapt the menu and prepare for an alternative for you.
All menus will be vegetarian to respect our environment.
I have a disability, can I attend the retreat? Will there be accommodations available for me?
You are welcome, if you wish, to share with us any disability or health-related condition you feel is important to mention. There is, of course, no obligation to do so. You will have the opportunity to indicate any specific needs or required accommodations at the time of booking, or during a conversation prior to the retreat.

The venue can accommodate certain disabilities but is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users. However, two bedrooms are located on the ground floor: one private double room and one shared room, where you are welcome to stay with a companion if you wish. These rooms provide step-free access to a shower as well as to the common areas (living room, dining room, and kitchen), all located on the same level.

For any other type of disability or specific need, we are committed to finding appropriate solutions — whether that means adapting the activities or ensuring you have access to a quiet space if your accommodation is not private. No activity is ever mandatory, and you should never feel pressured to participate in anything that does not feel fully comfortable for you during the retreat.

Wild Read is open to all book lovers. Accessibility should never be a barrier, and we will always do our best to ensure that everyone can take part in the retreat in a way that feels right for them.
Are travel costs included in the pricing?
Travel costs from your country to the destination (Blair Atholl Estate) are not included in the pricing. That includes flights, trains, and car rentals. However, you will be picked up from Blair Atholl train station and taken to the lodge, and from the lodge to the train station for your departure. Any travel during the five days of the retreat for activities and exploration will also be covered during the five days of the retreat.
I booked a space but I am unable to attend the retreat:
After your booking, you have 14 days to cancel your registration and receive a full refund of the deposit paid.

Once the 14-day statutory withdrawal period has expired, the deposit becomes strictly non-refundable. After this period, no refund, cancellation, or credit can be granted.

If you cancel at least 30 days before the retreat, we will refund 50 % of the balance already paid. After this deadline, the balance becomes non-refundable.

However, you will have the option to transfer your participation to another retreat organized the same year or transfer your place in the event of force majeure.
Do I need to subscribe to an insurance?
We always recommend to subscribe to a travel and/or a health insurance. The United Kingdom is not part of the EU anymore, so if you travel from any European countries, your health insurance won’t apply in Scotland.
If you come from a country outside of the European Union, we also recommend you subscribe to travel and health insurance. Wild Read won’t cover any costs related to delayed means of transportation or any costs related to health issues.
Do I need to speak French to join the retreat?
Not at all! Wild Read has been created to welcome all book lovers. Retreats season will always have a week for French speakers from all over the world, and another week for English speakers. Meaning that for the English speaking week, all activities, discussions and workshops will be in English. But if you want to dust off your French, feel free to join the French speaking week of retreat and make new friends from all over the world!
Why is Wild Read a women only reading retreat ?
Wild Read was born from a personal dream, but also from a desire shared by many readers: the wish to find a gentle, soothing, and nurturing space where they could reconnect with themselves and with other women. We wanted to create a place of sisterhood, listening, and sharing — far from the expectations and pressures of everyday life.

In the surveys carried out before each retreat, hundreds of participants clearly expressed their wish to enjoy an exclusively female space. This request is not meant to exclude anyone, but rather to meet the needs of women who feel most comfortable, safe, and free to be themselves in such an environment, without fear of judgment.

Our Wild Read retreats are therefore designed to provide a safe and intimate setting, one that encourages trust, connection, and personal growth. They allow women to form genuine bonds, build a true sense of community, and experience reading and sharing in a deeply enriching way.

Ultimately, this choice reflects our commitment to honouring the needs and wishes of our community, while offering an environment that fosters growth, mutual support, and sisterhood.
What are the options : Tarot reading and photoshoot?
The photoshoot is a special moment with a professional photographer (@fionamcnicolphotography) whose goal is to give you timeless images of yourself as the main character. Whether you choose to simply have a series of beautiful portraits taken in the Highlands, or to put on your favourite fantasy or historical outfit, pick up a sword, and wear your favourite crown, the purpose is to bring out the heroine within you. Posing in front of a camera isn’t always easy, which is why we carefully selected a photographer we trust—gentle, encouraging, and, above all, fun! Treat yourself to this unique experience and dare to show yourself as you truly are. Each photoshoot lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

For the tarot reading, your host, Laura, offers you a space where you can ask the questions that have been tugging at your mind, the ones that make you smile, or simply allow yourself a magical moment that brings you back to yourself and adds a touch of mystery to your retreat experience. It’s an in-depth intuitive reading designed to help you see things more clearly, or simply to introduce you to the tarot and its secrets in a private, meaningful moment. Each reading lasts 30 minutes.

Reclaim your main character energy.
